Your takes stay on your phone and your Mac. This page says exactly what else happens, and when.

Last updated: [DATE]

Soloset is two apps: Soloset for iPhone, a camera, and Soloset for Mac, a monitor that runs it. They are built so that what you film stays on your phone and your Mac. This page says what the apps handle, what leaves your devices and when, and what you can do about it.

The short version

  • Your takes (video, audio, memos, markers) are recorded on your iPhone and copied to your Mac. We never receive them.
  • The phone and the Mac talk directly over your own local network, encrypted with a key that only that pair has. Nothing passes through our servers or any cloud.
  • There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, in the apps or on this website. We do not sell or share personal information.
  • A few things on the Mac talk to the internet: licence activation and checks, and update checks. They send what is listed below and nothing else. The iPhone app does not talk to the internet at all.
  • When you buy, Polar, our reseller, handles your payment. We see your name, email and order, never your card.

Who we are

Soloset is made by Roberto Cinetto, a sole proprietor based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ("we", "us"), and sold through Polar, our reseller (see "When you buy"). Privacy questions: privacy@soloset.app. We give a postal address for legal notices on request.

We are responsible (the "controller") only for the small amount of personal information that reaches us: purchase and licence records, emails you send us, and diagnostics you choose to send. We never receive what you film.

What the apps keep on your devices

All of this stays on your devices and is never sent to us.

What the apps ask you to allow

  • Camera (iPhone): to record your takes, and to read the pairing code your Mac shows.
  • Microphone (iPhone): to record sound with the video, and voice memos while a take is paused.
  • Local network (iPhone and Mac): so the two apps can find each other on your network (with Bonjour) and exchange the live picture, commands and files. Without it they cannot see each other.

Soloset does not use your location, contacts, photos library, or any advertising identifier.

How the phone and the Mac talk

When you pair, the Mac shows a code holding a new random secret (256 bits). The phone reads it with its camera, or you type it. From that secret, each device derives the keys for the three channels between them (control, live picture and files), and every connection is encrypted with TLS using those keys. The code works once and for ten minutes. A phone or Mac that was not paired with yours cannot connect. All of this happens on your local network; the internet is not involved and we never see the secret.

What leaves your devices, and when

Licence activation and checks (Mac, once you enter a licence)

When you enter a licence key, and later to confirm it, Soloset for Mac contacts Polar's licence service (api.polar.sh). It sends your licence key, the activation ID for this Mac, a random ID created on this Mac and kept in the Keychain (not your serial number or any hardware ID), the app version, and a label with your Mac's model identifier (for example "Mac (Mac15,3)"), never your Mac's name. Polar also sees your IP address. After activation, Soloset checks again in the background about once a week. A network failure never takes the licence away.

The free trial sends nothing to us or to Polar: it is counted on your Mac.

Update checks (Mac)

Soloset for Mac checks for updates with Sparkle. A check downloads a small file (the "appcast") from soloset.app; an update downloads the new version from GitHub Releases. These hosts see your IP address and, in the request, the app and macOS versions. No other information about your Mac is sent.

The iPhone app is updated by the App Store, under Apple's terms.

Diagnostics (only if you choose)

If you choose to send us diagnostics, Soloset prepares a file with the app's logs and crash reports, and opens an email to support@soloset.app that you send from your own mail app. You can read it first. It holds technical information (versions, device model, settings, recent errors), never your video, sound or memos. Nothing is sent unless you send that email.

If you share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's or Mac's settings, Apple may send us crash reports and anonymous usage statistics under Apple's own privacy policy. You can turn this off in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.

What we never receive

We never receive your video, your sound, your memos, your markers, your pairing keys, or anything about what you film.

This website

This site is a set of static pages hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from other sites. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and request details to deliver the pages and protect them from abuse, under its own privacy policy. Links to the App Store, GitHub (for downloads) and Polar (for buying) take you to those sites, under their own policies.

When you buy

Soloset for Mac is sold through Polar (Polar Software, Inc.), which acts as the merchant of record and reseller. Polar collects your payment details, billing address and tax information, charges you, and sends receipts. Polar is responsible for that data under its own privacy policy (opens in a new tab) and buyer terms (opens in a new tab). Card details are handled by Polar's payment processor; we never see them.

Polar shares with us what we need to give you your licence and support: your name, email address, country, what you bought, the price, your licence key and its activations, and any refund. We use it to provide the licence, answer you, handle refunds, prevent fraud and keep tax and business records.

We do not send marketing email.

When you write to us

If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use it to answer you and keep it as long as needed to help you, and for at most 3 years after our last exchange, unless the law requires longer.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies: we process purchase and licence data to perform our contract with you, keep tax and business records because the law requires it, and answer emails and prevent fraud in our legitimate interest. Diagnostics you send are processed because you chose to send them.

How long we keep it

Purchase and licence records: as long as your licence is active, then as long as tax law requires (in Canada, generally 6 years). Emails: see above.

Where it is processed

We are in Canada. Polar and its processors are in the United States and elsewhere. When personal information moves between countries, we rely on the safeguards the law provides, such as standard contractual clauses where they apply.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR, Canada's PIPEDA, Quebec's Law 25 or California's CCPA), you can ask to see, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information, object to or restrict some uses, and withdraw consent. Write to privacy@soloset.app. We answer within 30 days. You can also complain to your data protection authority (in Canada, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner).

Most of your data never reaches us, so you control it directly: delete takes on the phone or the Mac, remove a pairing, or delete the apps.

Children

Soloset is not made for children under 13 (or the age required where you live), and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Filming other people

If your takes show other people (for example a client's hands), you are responsible for having their permission. Your takes never reach us.

Changes

If we change this policy, we update the date above and, for important changes, say so on this site and in the release notes.
