Terms of use and licence

The agreement between you and us when you use Soloset.

Last updated: [DATE]

These terms are an agreement between you and Roberto Cinetto, a sole proprietor based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ("we", "us"), who makes Soloset. Soloset is two apps: Soloset for iPhone and Soloset for Mac. These terms apply when you download, try, buy or use either. If you do not agree, do not install or use them. If you use Soloset for a company, you accept these terms for that company too.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the consumer law of the place where you live.

1. Soloset for iPhone

Soloset for iPhone is free and is distributed by Apple through the App Store. Apple's standard licensed application end user licence agreement (the "Apple EULA") applies to it, together with these terms where they do not conflict. Apple is not responsible for the app or its support; we are. There is nothing to buy inside the iPhone app.

2. Who sells Soloset for Mac

You buy Soloset for Mac from Polar (Polar Software, Inc., Delaware, USA), which acts as merchant of record and authorized reseller. Polar takes the payment, charges sales tax or VAT, sends the receipt and processes refunds. Your purchase, the payment, is a contract with Polar under Polar's buyer terms (opens in a new tab). Your right to use Soloset for Mac, the licence, comes from us under these terms. Our refund promise in section 8 applies on top of Polar's terms.

3. The licence

Soloset is licensed, not sold. When you buy a licence, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to install and use Soloset for Mac for personal or work purposes, under these terms.

  • One person, up to 3 Macs. One licence is for one person, on up to 3 Macs that person owns or uses. A company that wants Soloset for several people buys one licence per person.
  • Activation. A Mac uses a licence slot when you enter the key. You can free a slot from Settings › Licence › Deactivate This Mac, or from Polar's customer portal.
  • Version 1 updates are free. Every 1.x update is included. A future major version (2.0) may be a paid upgrade; we will say so in advance, and your 1.x version keeps working.
  • No subscription. You pay once.

Soloset, its code, design, name and content belong to us and are protected by copyright and other laws. We keep every right not given to you in these terms.

You must be old enough to make a binding contract where you live, or use Soloset with the permission of a parent or guardian who accepts these terms.

4. The free trial

You can try Soloset for Mac free for 14 days, with every feature and no card. The days start with your first take on the Mac and are counted on your Mac. When the trial ends without a licence, the live preview and take control on the Mac (start, pause, stop, highlights, memos, keys and pedal) stop until you enter a licence. Your takes are never locked: the Mac keeps copying, checking, listing, playing and exporting them, and the iPhone app keeps recording on its own. A take already running when the trial ends can still be finished.

5. What you may do

  • Install Soloset for Mac on up to 3 Macs per licence, and Soloset for iPhone on the iPhones you use.
  • Use it for personal and commercial work.
  • Make backups of the apps and your takes.
  • Use what you film however you like. It is yours.

6. What you may not do

  • Share, sell, rent, lend or publish your licence key, or use one key for more than one person.
  • Remove, bypass or tamper with the licence check, the trial or the update signature.
  • Copy, modify, or make works based on Soloset, except as allowed by law.
  • Decompile or reverse engineer Soloset, except where the law allows it despite this rule.
  • Remove copyright, trademark or licence notices.
  • Use Soloset to break the law, including filming or recording people without the consent the law requires where you are.
  • Use Soloset to harm people.

7. Price, payment and taxes

The price is shown on our website and at checkout, with taxes added or included as Polar shows. Discounts apply only while they are offered. Prices may change, but a change never affects a licence you already paid for.

8. Refunds

You can ask for a full refund within 14 days of purchase, with no questions asked. See the refund policy. When a refund is made, the licence key is revoked and the licence ends. Your takes stay yours.

If you are a consumer in the EU, the UK or another place with a legal right to withdraw from an online purchase, this refund gives you at least that right.

9. Your takes and your responsibility

Soloset copies every file of a take to your Mac and checks it against the phone's copy, and it is built so that a dropped connection does not cost you the recording. But no software can promise that nothing is ever lost: phones and disks fail, and files get deleted. Keep backups of takes that matter. Soloset is not a backup service.

What you film is yours, and you are responsible for it, including having permission from anyone who appears in it.

10. Updates and support

  • Soloset for Mac checks for updates with Sparkle and asks before it installs one. Updates are signed and checked before they install. Soloset for iPhone is updated through the App Store.
  • The two apps must run compatible versions. When they do not, both say so; update both.
  • Support is by email at support@soloset.app. We aim to reply within 3 working days. We are a small team, so we cannot promise a fix for every request.
  • We may change or remove features in later versions. We will not remove a core feature you paid for from the version you already have.

11. Third-party services

  • Apple. The App Store distributes Soloset for iPhone under Apple's terms. Apple's operating systems provide the camera, network and Keychain the apps use.
  • Polar. Payments, receipts, licence keys and refunds.
  • GitHub. Downloads of Soloset for Mac are served from GitHub Releases.
  • Your network and your accessories. Soloset works over your own local network and with keyboards and pedals you choose. We are not responsible for them.

12. Open-source components

Soloset may include open-source software. Its licences are listed in the app. Where an open-source licence gives you more rights for that component, that licence applies to it.

13. No warranty

We work hard to make Soloset reliable, and the free trial lets you check that it works for you before you pay. But, as far as the law allows, Soloset is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranty, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement. We do not promise that it will be error free, work without interruption, or work with every iPhone, Mac, network, mount or pedal.

Soloset for iPhone needs iOS 18.2 or later. Soloset for Mac needs macOS 14 or later. Both need a local network that lets devices see each other.

Some places do not allow these exclusions. Where that is so, the exclusion applies only as far as the law allows, and your legal guarantees (for example the guarantee that digital content conforms to the contract in the EU and the UK, or the Quebec Consumer Protection Act) still apply.

14. Limit of liability

As far as the law allows:

  • We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, such as lost profits, lost footage or lost work.
  • Our total liability for any claim about Soloset is limited to the amount you paid for your licence (or, for the free iPhone app alone, 50 US dollars).

This does not limit liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or any other liability that cannot be limited by law.

15. Ending the licence

  • You can stop using Soloset at any time. Deactivate your Macs and delete the apps.
  • The licence ends if you get a refund or a chargeback, or if you seriously break these terms (for example by sharing your key publicly). We will tell you by email first when we can.
  • When the licence ends, the paid features stop. Your takes stay yours. Sections 9 and 13 to 18 continue to apply.

16. Export and sanctions

You may not use or export Soloset in breach of Canadian, US or other export control or sanctions laws.

17. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. The UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply. Courts in British Columbia can hear disputes. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.

Please write to us first. Most problems are fixed faster by email.

18. Other terms

  • Changes. We may update these terms for new versions or new laws. The version in force when you bought keeps applying to that purchase for the major version you bought, unless you agree to a new version. Changes required by law or that only help you can apply right away.
  • Whole agreement. These terms, the refund policy and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Soloset.
  • Severability. If a part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • Transfer. You may not transfer the licence without our written agreement. We may transfer these terms if we pass on Soloset, and your rights stay the same.
  • Language. These terms are written in English. Where the law requires a version in your language to apply, that version applies. Otherwise a translation is for convenience, and the English text prevails.
